Application:

Exhaust valve 3142A052 is the standard exhaust valve for the Perkins 4.236, 4.248 and 6.354.2 naturally-aspirated and turbocharged diesel engines that have been fitted to Massey Ferguson 362/365/375/383 tractors, MF 30/31 combines, JCB 530-70 Loadall tele-handlers, 40-65 kVA generator sets and a wide spectrum of industrial sweepers, forklift trucks and irrigation pumps. The same valve is also specified for the later 4.41 and T4.40 builds, making it a high-volume service item across farms, rental fleets and construction yards worldwide.

Technical specifications:

The valve is a one-piece forging with a 36.6 mm (1.440 in) head diameter, 7.6 mm stem diameter and 123.3 mm (4.855 in) overall length, ground to a 45° seat angle that mates with the exhaust seat insert. The stem is hard-chrome plated to 0.015 mm thickness to give a 58 HRC surface that resists galling in cast-iron guides, while the 8.0 mm stem tip is stellite-faced to withstand 950 °C exhaust gas temperature and 200 MPa seat impact stress. A 3.5 mm sodium-filled hollow cavity in the head reduces operating temperature by 60 °C.

Material & performance features:

The head is forged from 21-4N (5Cr-9Mn-4Ni) austenitic valve steel that retains 85 % of its 950 °C tensile strength after 500 h, while the stem is friction-welded to a low-carbon martensitic tail to give 220 HV10 core hardness and improved fatigue resistance. The seat face is plasma-nitrided to 0.08 mm depth and 950 HV surface hardness, giving a wear index better than 1,000 hours in continuous 3,000 rpm field tests.
